Richard Kanee is the CBC’s new head of digital for English Services.

Kanee started his role on Aug. 25 and will lead a small team responsible for the development and delivery of the public broadcaster’s digital strategic plan, including the CBC prioritizing towards mobile and digital platforms. He takes over the role from Tessa Sproule, who left the public broadcaster earlier this year to launch the contrarian video website, Vubble.

“It’s a very exciting time to be joining the CBC,” Kanee said in a press release. “I feel very fortunate to be coming on board as the public broadcaster looks towards its digital future, and I can’t wait to start working with the team here on finding ways to grow our leadership position on digital platforms.”  

Kanee will report to Neil McEneaney, chief business officer at CBC English Services.

“It’s no secret we live in a digital world and with our new strategic plan putting an even stronger emphasis on digital and mobile, it’s imperative that we have a strong leader to drive our thinking in that space,” McEneaney said. “Richard is well respected across the industry and his extensive background and experience will be a big asset to us. He is known for his strategic mind and strong business acumen—qualities I know will be a great benefit to CBC English Services.”

Prior to joining CBC, Kanee worked as the president and CEO of Creative D Inc., a digital media company working to engage online audiences, and he has also held senior roles with a focus on digital with CTVGlobemedia and CHUM Interactive.
