The Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism has been awarded to recent Carleton University graduate Natalie Stechyson, Postmedia announced. A graduate of Carleton’s Master of Journalism program, Stechyson is the third recipient of the award and has experience reporting and editing for Postmedia News, The Globe and Mail and New Brunswick’s The Telegraph-Journal.

 

The Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism has been awarded to recent Carleton University graduate Natalie Stechyson, Postmedia announced. A graduate of Carleton’s Master of Journalism program, Stechyson is the third recipient of the award and has experience reporting and editing for Postmedia News, The Globe and Mail and New Brunswick’s The Telegraph-Journal.

She is the third Carleton graduate to win the award and will spend six months working at Postmedia News in Ottawa before spending the last six months of the fellowship at The Calgary Herald. The position pays the same amount as a starter reporter — about $40,000. It also funds a project chosen by the fellow that is inspired by Lang’s portfolio of work and has social significance — Stechyson's will be about health and legal themes, she tweeted.

“I’m thrilled to have been chosen as the recipient of this very prestigious fellowship,” Stechyson told Postmedia. “The opportunity to pursue a special project is a reporter’s dream and to do it while honouring the memory of Michelle Lang is truly inspiring.”

The Michelle Lang Fellowship was created in memory of Michelle Lang, a Calgary Herald reporter and the first Canadian who was killed while reporting on the war in Afghanistan in 2009. For more information check out The Michelle Lang Fellowship website.
