Masthead Online has posted Tally 2008, its annual listing of Canadian magazine launches and closures.

According to the list, at least 71 mags were launched last year, while at least 29 were officially shut down and six are listed as missing in action.

The print version of Masthead was one of those that shut last year, and Masthead Online editor Marco Ursi notes that this is the first year then that the Tally has been fully available online.

Launches include Best Health, Edible Vancouver, Up Here Business, Sharp and Canadian Real Estate.

Closures include Frank, Gardening Life, Wish, Time Canada and Locus Suspectus.

Ursi notes:

allows us to make adjustments in a timelier and more transparent manner.”
