Before launching It’s Your Life, Terri-Ann Cormier didn’t know squat about the publishing biz, but that didn’t stop her from following her dream. Literally.
The founder of the new Maritimes-based health magazine recently told the Telegraph-Journal how it all came to her in a dream:
“They [health magazines from B.C. and Alberta] really didn’t pertain to what was going on down here. We’re very different from out west. We’re several years behind. What they were saying in their magazines didn’t really resonate with people down here.”
Then about six months ago:
“I went to sleep and the idea came to me: ‘Do you own, Terri-Ann’. I swear I don’t ever remember my dreams, but I woke up the next morning and I said, ‘OK. I’m going to do it.'”
And she did. While Cormier may have been a newbie to the publishing world, she was no stranger in the business world. For starters, she owns an eco-store called Naturally For Life, which launched in 2009. Before that she launched a design store.
To launch the mag, she told the Telegraph,”I do what I do best and I started researching. I went out and bought every health magazine and lifestyle magazine and I started ordering them all and I started calling printers. I sat down with them all over the floor, took a look at them and asked myself what do I like best about them and what don’t I like about them.”
You can view the result of that effort online. And for those of you especially interested in the new venture, check out the video of the launch:
In other launch news, Masthead reports that a new magazine devoted to the ever-popular world of mixed martial arts (MMA) is set to debut at the end of this month.
“MMA Guide intends to make a big entrance with lots of fireworks. One-hundred thousand copies are planned for the initial issue, which features an exclusive cover feature with UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Already, a short YouTube excerpt of the Velasquez interview has attracted scores of hits — 20,000 in the first 48 hours post-release.”
The mag’s publisher, Harris Rosen, is also the man behind Peace! magazine, which bills itself as “Canada’s street style magazine.”
