One of the most poignant moments during a memorial service Friday night to honour slain Canadian journalist Ali Sharmarke came when the 11-year-old son of Sharmarke’s colleague recited a letter he wrote upon hearing of his father’s friend’s death, reports the Ottawa Citizen. Sharmarke, co-founder of the independent news station HornAfrik, and fellow journalist Mahad Ahmed Elmi were shot and killed in Somalia on August 11. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, in the two weeks since their deaths, three more journalists have been killed in Somalia.
