The Globe and Mail’s managing editor is joining the Wall Street Journal as the U.S. newspaper’s Canada bureau chief, based in Toronto.

The Globe and Mail’s managing editor is joining the Wall Street Journal as the U.S. newspaper’s Canada bureau chief, based in Toronto.

In a memo sent to staff, Globe editor-in-chief John Stackhouse said Cherney “served as the Globe's managing editor for the past 18 months, overseeing an extraordinary array of journalism as well as helping manage our transition to a digital subscription model.”

According to the memo, Cherney joined the Globe in 2007 as assistant editor for the life section and then moved to the Report on Business section as bureaus editor. She was then promoted to editor of the section in 2009 and worked as the newspaper’s managing editor since 2012. She has previously worked for the Peterborough Examiner, National Post and the Wall Street Journal.

“At the Journal, Elena will take on the new role of global resources editor, running an international team while being able to maintain her home in Toronto,” Stackhouse said in the memo.

 Her last day at the Globe is Jan. 17.
