Global News now has a newly redesigned website, the broadcaster announced.

According to the news release, the new site “allows users to personalize their news experience with newsletters, breaking news alerts and homepages that automatically display the local headlines and weather. Up-to-the-minute weather forecasts are provided in partnership with MyWeather LLC, offering users weather on-demand via exclusive personalized Forecast4me emails and downloadable desktop applications. In addition, News.GlobalTV.com and its local sites are also available via mobile devices, allowing for 24-7 access to news on the go.”

Global has also added social media features such as Facebook, Twitter, RSS and sharing and commenting capabilities. In addition, Global said it plans to make anchors and correspondents available for live interaction during special events. Global’s news magazine show, 16×9 has a liveblog that allows viewers to participate in online story meetings.

Alfred Hermida, University of British Columbia journalism professor and blogger, noted that the new design “shows promise.”

He wrote on his Newslab blog:

“The new site has more multimedia features but on first impressions,
Global still has some way to go to capitalise on the potential of the
internet.”
