Gary Mittelholtz, a former CBC Radio host, died of a heart attack on March 13 while cross-country skiing near in New Brunswick, CBC News reports.
Mittelholtz started working as a technician at CBC Radio in Toronto in the summer of 1976. He moved to Saint John about ten years later and worked at CBC until he retired in December 2008. After retiring from CBC, he became publisher and editor of the River Valley News, a New Brunswick community newspaper.
He hosted various New Brunswick programs including The Rolling Home Show and Mainstreet.
Harvey MacLeod, a colleague of Mittelholtz’s, told CBC News:
“He always knew a story when he saw one. When Gary would leave the studio in the morning he’d go out with a tape recorder and he’d come back at the end of the day with six different stories.”
