Eichenwald’s “weird checkbook journalism”

Slate writer Jack Shafer reports on the latest developments in the Kurt Eichenwald case. In late 2005, Eichenwald wrote a piece for The New York Times about child pornography. He admitted to giving former child-porn performer Justin Berry, who is also a source in the story, a $2,000 cheque, then asking for it back. Shafer questions the veracity of the four disparate explanations Eichenwald and his editors at the Times give for his “weird checkbook journalism.”
