CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Final Report
In early 2024, I could see my undergraduate convocation on the horizon and wasn’t sure what was beyond that. After applying to the fellowship and being interviewed, I learned that I would have the pleasure of spending six months working at CBC’s headquarters in Toronto. My placements during this time were The Fifth Estate and CBC Arts, which I selected after connecting with producers there, who then welcomed me to the team and encouraged my natural curiosity.
At The Fifth Estate, I nourished a love of investigative journalism that was already beginning to bloom, working on two episodes: Inside the Interrogation Room and A Sister’s Promise. At CBC Arts, I produced three digital files: one on a play about the West African single woman’s experience, another about trailblazer Gloria Baylis, and finally a ceramics exhibit by Misbah Ahmed at the Art Gallery of Burlington.
My time at CBC provided me with a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a large news corporation and the different ways of presenting news, such as broadcast, radio and digital. Through its cross-national network, I was able to make connections with the CBC bureau in Halifax, where my maternal side of the family has lived for centuries. I’m looking forward to working with Ask CBC during the upcoming election as well as leading a conversation about disinformation and medicine with Dr. Brian Goldman, a CBC podcast and radio host, on April 24, 2025 at the Paradise Theatre.
