Ethan Faber, managing editor and assistant news director for CTV Vancouver, will travel to Sierra Leone on Feb. 8 to lead human rights workshops and mentor local radio and TV reporters.
Faber will travel to the West African country as part of a partnership between CTV and Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) that sends three candidates to a country of their choice where JHR works. The program launched in November 2013.
Sierra Leone is still recovering from a devastating 11-year civil war that ended in 2002 and left more than 50,000 dead. “The key now, as it is for any democracy, is the development of a free press to shine a light on problems and pursue accountability from those with the power to fix them,” Faber said in a press release. “The chance to share some of my skills with the young journalists who will lead this charge is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I fully expect they will have much to teach me as well.”
Faber will maintain a blog here.
