Craig Silverman is joining Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism as a fellow, conducting research into how news organizations deal with rumours and unverified information.

He will also identify best practices for how journalists can debunk misinformation and the results will be published in a research paper published next year, Silverman wrote in a post on his website.

“This fellowship gives me the chance to really dig into the area of debunking, which has become something of an obsession for me,” Silverman said. “This project enables me to conduct quantitative research to learn more about how rumours are being treated by news orgs, and what can be done to better debunk false information in a networked world.”
