With the New York Times and Wall Street Journal looking at launching hyperlocal news sites in San Francisco, community reaction is mixed, according to Mission Loc@l, an existing neighbourhood news site.
Mission Loc@l started in 2008 as a hyperlocal news site serving the Mission District. It is part of an initiative in hyperlocal coverage
developed by UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and supported
by the school, the Ford Foundation and other donors.
It is funded through public/private
partnerships that involve journalism schools, private foundations and
community supporters.
The increase in interest by the major national news organization may be based on the struggling San Francisco Chronicle, which is facing financial hardship since the spring.
