While Hubert Lacroix, CBC’s president and chief executive officer, has denied CBC and Quebecor are duking it out, the Toronto Star suggests otherwise.
In a recent story, the Star reports the latest on the two news organizations’ battle. “While the CBC is used to the scrutiny involved in being a publicly funded broadcaster”, remarks Star reporter Chantaie Allick, “A war of words of this nature has rarely been seen in Canadian broadcasting.”
Allick recounts the story leading up to the CBC’s decision to fight back, accusing Quebecor of using its newspapers to campaign against CBC and of distorting the truth. In turn, Quebecor accused CBC of doing the same.
As the Star adds, it all became more complicated earlier this week when Information Commissioner Suzanne Legault criticized the CBC for not doing its due-diligence when it comes to the handling of access-to-information requests for documents. Her office is now engaged in a court battle with the CBC to gain access to said documents.
Read the Star’s story for the full take. In the meantime, tell us what you think: Should the CBC be forced to cough up the documents?
