Up to 180 staffers at CBC (English) will be handed lay off notices starting next week, the public broadcaster has announced.
These layoffs are a part of the 393 cuts that CBC announced were likely back in March.
About 100 people applied for voluntary severance packages, CBC reports, and while not all those who applied will be accepted, the number of layoffs was reduced by the volunteers.
Executive vice-president Richard Stursberg said the broadcaster ended the 2008-9 fiscal year with a small surplus and so the cuts weren’t as deep as expected.
The maximum number of layoffs will be 180, he said.
Layoff notices will be issued May 27 and 28.
