Broadcasters say no to political ads using their content. Sounds good, but can they do it?

<p><strong>By Thomas Rose, Law Editor</strong></p><p>With a provincial election underway in Ontario and four federal by-elections slated for the end of June, the timing of the announcement by Canada’s national broadcasters that they will not allow unauthorized use of their content in political ads is auspicious. </p><p>The announcement late last week by CBC, Rogers, Shaw and CTV—who own or operate the bulk of all television and radio stations in Canada—came wrapped in the ideal of journalistic independence.</p>

Union: Globe proposes reporters write advertorial copy

<p><strong>By Tamara Baluja, Associate Editor</strong></p><p><em>The Globe and Mail </em>wants its management to have the right to assign editorial employees to write and edit advertorial copy as part of their regular duties, according to this union bulletin. </p><p>The following is the opening proposals from both management and the union's side. Bargaining resumes on May 20. </p><p>Both sides have said they will not talk about the proposals. </p>

CBC’s Linden MacIntyre, Alison Smith, Nancy Wilson announce retirement

<p><strong>By Tamara Baluja, Associate Editor</strong></p><p>Linden MacIntyre, the host of <em>The Fifth Estate</em>, said he felt compelled to retire to stave off the layoffs of younger journalists at CBC who would lose their jobs as part of a $130-million budget cut. Meanwhile, <em>World at Six</em> host Alison Smith and CBC Newsnet's Nancy Wilson said they will retire soon.  </p>
