Glen Hancock, former head of Nova Scotia journalism school, has passed away

<p> </p><p>Glen Hancock, who was a key figure in developing journalism education in Nova Scotia, has passed away.</p><p>Hancock was able to balance working in both journalism and public relations, as he worked as an advisor for Imperial Oil while writing for magazines and newspapers. Prior to working with Imperial Oil, Hancock was an editorial and feature writer for the <em>London Free Press, </em>where his articles were widely syndicated<em>. </em></p>

Freedom to report election results welcomed

<p>An odd Canadian law that prohibits reporting election results from the east before polls close in the west appears to be dead, and there don't seem to be many mourners.</p><p>Federal Minister of State for Democratic Reform Tim Uppal <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MinTimUppal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced the change via Twitter</a> Friday. By using a social network tool to announce the ban would be revealed, Uppal highlighted one of the key reasons for the change: The law has become largely unenforceable.</p>

Same-sex marriage vs. Stephen Harper: False outrage and how the media got it wrong

<p><em>On Thursday, </em>The Globe and Mail<em> ran a <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/despite-legal-about-face-harper-has-no-intention-of-reopening-same-sex-marriage/article2299574/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">front-page story</a> that stated there had been a "reversal" of policy on the part of the government when it came to the legality of same-sex marriages in Canada. Outrage ensued. Commenters, social media and response columns all blasted Stephen Harper and his Conservative government for a move they considered to be steps backward for our society. </em></p>

Report saying Harper-Putin hockey match was being planned was wrong: The Star

<p>Toronto Star public editor Kathy English's <a href="http://www.thestar.com/opinion/public_editor/2012/01/13/star_report_about_harperputin_hockey_match_was_offside.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">latest column</a> addresses a <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2012/01/09/harper_putin_to_star_in_1972_summit_series_rematch.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">front-page story</a> from earlier this week that claimed Stephen Harper was planning on playing hockey against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, saying they got the story wrong.
