Postmedia and Ottawa Citizen stories on “Robocalls” win Michener Award

<p style="margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 12px; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">Canada's top journalism prize was awarded tonight to Postmedia News and the Ottawa Citizen for what the jury for the Michener award called "the detailed and sustained reporting (that) exposed the use of “robocalls” to mislead and harass voters during the 2011 federal election campaign." </p>

“High” number of complaints filed to Ontario Press Council for stories on the Ford family

<p>Stories in two of Canada's largest newspapers about Toronto's controversial mayor and his family have prompted complaints to the Ontario Press Council. Five formal complaints have been lodged against the <em>Toronto Star </em>and the <em>Globe and Mail</em> for stories written about the Ford brothers and their alleged drug activity, according to Ontario Press Council executive director Don McCurdy.</p>

RSF: «Le Canada n’est pas une priorité»

Attention journalists: Federal government makes data site more searchable

<p><strong>By Fred Vallance-Jones</strong>, <strong>J-Source data journalism editor</strong></p><p>The federal government is poised to roll out an upgraded version of its <a href="http://data.gc.ca/default.asp?lang=En&n=F9B7A1E3-1">open data site.</a></p><p>The site, first introduced in 2011, will be significantly improved, with better search abilities and more datasets, said a Treasury Board Secretariat official who spoke at a recent computing conference in Ottawa.</p>

CBC leads with 30 RTDNA Canada awards, Global comes in second with 10

Investigative report on teen boot camps wins best feature at PWAC awards

<p>Georgie Binks won the PWAC award for best feature story for “<a href="http://www.slideshare.net/autumnd86/readers-digest-1">Tough Love</a>,” an investigative report on teen boot camps published in <em>Readers Digest</em>. Jackie Middleton’s health story in the <em>Globe and Mail </em>on how to “<a href="http://www.besthealthmag.ca/get-healthy/health/does-disease-run-in-your-family">Unlock the Secrets of your Family Tree</a>” won the short articles award. Peggy Berkowitz won the PWAC editor of the year award for her work in <em>University Affairs.</em></p>

The Grid lays off four staff

<p><em>The Grid</em> has laid of four staff members, according to the <a href="http://canadianmags.blogspot.ca/2013/06/the-grid-lays-off-four-staff.html">Canadian Magazine blog</a>.</p><p>Deputy editor Pat Lynch, staff writer David Topping, associate editor Matthew Halliday and assistant online editor Rob Duffy have been let go. Senior editor Edward Keenan <a href="https://twitter.com/thekeenanwire/status/345600050551996416">tweeted</a> the cuts represent a quarter of 16 full-time staff.</p>

Winners of Gordon Sinclair Roving Reporter Bursary announced

<p>At a time when most news organizations are cutting back on foreign bureaus and on travel, three reporters have got the Gordon Sinclair Roving Reporter Bursary allowing them to report from Peru, southern Europe and northern Alberta.</p><p>The $15,000 bursary supports travel for a minimum of six weeks for an early career Canadian journalist who has within the last five years graduated from a university-level journalism program.</p>
