Eduardo D. Lingao, multimedia director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and winner of the 2010 McLuhan Prize of the Canadian Embassy of the Philippines, will speak at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at Inforum, 4th Floor, Bissell Building, 140 St. George St. in Toronto. His topic is “Shooting the Messenger: The Maguindanao Massacre and the Phenomenon of Media Killings in the Philippines.”

The McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology lecture is presented by the Coach House Institute at the University of Toronto.

The Maguindanao massacre on November 23, 2009, was the single largest incident of extrajudicial killings of media practitioners in the world, with 32 media workers murdered in just one incident. The incident was made more horrific by the fact that the suspects, incumbent local officials, used members of the government militia and their government-purchased firearms to commit the massacre. The suspects even brought in a government-owned backhoe to dig the mass graves for the victims and bury the bodies along with their vehicles.
