Chris Benjamin and Paul Webster win 2013 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Awards

<p>Halifax writer Chris Benjamin and Toronto writer Paul Webster won the 2013 <a href="http://www.greberwritingaward.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dave Greber Freelance Writers Awards</a>, as announced on Oct. 20.</p><p>Benjamin won the $5,000 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Book Award. The winning chapter, titled “Creation Story,” is from his forthcoming book <em>The Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.</em></p>

Applications open for 2014 Canadian Hillman Prize

<p>The Sidney Hillman Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Canadian Hillman Prize honouring excellence in journalism in service of the common good. The Hillman Prize seeks out the best investigative reporting that draws attention to social or economic injustice and hopefully leads to corrective measures. Province reporter picks up top farm-writing prize

<p><strong>By Mary Baxter</strong></p><p>A reporter with Vancouver-based <em>The Province</em> daily newspaper has earned one of the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation’s top awards.</p><p>At the Federation’s annual awards ceremony held Saturday, Glenda Lyumes earned the gold Dick Beamish press feature award for “A leader in her field,” a profile of Jill Hoeppner, a British Columbia dairy producer.</p>

Canadian Medical Association announces health reporting award winners

Forum Freelance Fund awards three journalists bursaries for conflict-zone training

<p>The Forum Freelance Fund has awarded three Canadian journalists working in dangerous conditions bursaries for safety training.</p><p>The Forum Freelance Fund is sponsored by CBC News and supported by Radio-Canada, CNW and individual donations, and run by the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma. Two of the winners will attend a course at Columbia Journalism School, and one will attend a commercial safety course, according to a <a href="http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1222835/freelancers-in-danger-win-help-with-safety-training" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>.</p>

New award honours writer and historian Michael Fellman

<p><img align="left" alt="" class="imagecache-thumbnail inline-image" hspace="10" src="http://j-source.ca/sites/www.j-source.ca/files/imagecache/thumbnail/images/Fellman.JPG" title="" /><em>The Tyee</em> and the Simon Fraser University History department have established an award to honour historian Michael Fellman, who regularly contributed to the B.C.-based online publication.</p><p>Fellman died last year. He was a noted historian, political commentator and author who taught for almost 40 years at SFU.</p>

Jessica Barrett awarded the Michelle Lang Fellowship

<p><img align="left" alt="" class="imagecache-thumbnail inline-image" hspace="10" src="http://j-source.ca/sites/www.j-source.ca/files/imagecache/thumbnail/images/Barrett.JPG" title="" /> Postmedia Network has named Jessica Barrett the recipient of the 2013 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism.</p><p>Barrett will spend six months reporting for the Postmedia Network in Ottawa, followed by another six months working for the <em>Calgary Herald</em>. She will also work on a special project about Canada’s changing workforce, job market and economy.</p>

Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma offers bursaries for freelance journalists

<p>The deadline for freelance journalists to apply for bursaries from the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma to help pay for the cost of hazardous environment training is fast approaching.</p><p>The <a href="http://journalismforum.fims.uwo.ca/competition2013.aspx">Forum Freelance Fund</a> is sponsored by CBC News and supported by Radio-Canada, Canada News Wire, Macintosh Media and individual contributions. Last year, the fund awarded bursaries to freelancers based in Afghanistan, Tunisia, China and Colombia, all of whose works appeared in Canadian media.</p>
