Henry Burgoyne, a fourth generation member of a 104-year family newspaper dynasty in St. Catharines, died yesterday from cancer at the age of 61.
Following his family’s lead, Burgoyne became publisher of The St. Catharines Standard at age 26. From 1975 to 1996, he served as president, publisher and later board chairman for the Standard, reports Matthew Van Dongen of QMI Agency. At the time of the paper’s 100th anniversary in 1991, Burgoyne was head of “one of the few remaining independent, family-owned newspapers in Ontario.”
