The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean presented Globe and Mail editor-in-chief Edward Greenspon and La Presse editor Philippe Cantin with the 2007 Michener Award on Friday. The two papers were honoured for their reporting on the treatment of Afghan detainees. The awards foundation noted that the coverage led to an inquiry, a new agreement which allowed Canadian investigators access to the detainees and Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor’s being moved out of the position amidst criticism of his handling of the issue. Other news organizations recognized with citations of merit include the CBC, Le Devoir, the London Free Press, The Province and the Toronto Star.
