Now that the election has passed and the Conservatives have won a minority government, observers are looking back at the plethora of promises made during the campaign and questioning which ones will be fulfilled.
Masthead magazine points to one particular promise from the Harper camp that could be a positive change for freelance journalists in Canada. On September 15 the Conservatives announced a promise to extend maternity and parental-leave benefits to self-employed Canadians. Masthead quotes Toronto-based freelancer Claire Gagné:
“As a freelancer who is, at this exact moment, doing work with a
sleeping 10-month old strapped to her torso, I would strongly welcome
this. If he
delivers.”
Only time will tell if this is one of the election promises that will be kept.
