Photographers and illustrators are selling more than their time and expertise. Proper understanding of rights and responsibilities is crucial to a successful business. The Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communications (CAPIC) has created this “Business Practices” section on their website, which outlines the basics of what photographers and illustrators are actually selling, followed by how to go about selling it. This easy-to-read document gives details about copyright, licensing, electronic rights, photocopying and moral issues, among others. In terms of selling, the document gets into the nuts and bolts of pricing, estimating, purchase orders, contracts and other legalities.
