Jennifer McGuire has been named the new editor-in-chief and general manager of CBC News, the public broadcaster announced.
McGuire became interim head of news after John Cruickshank left in November, 2008 to become publisher of The Toronto Star.
As general manager and editor-in-chief, McGuire is responsible for CBC Newsworld, and news and current affairs programming on CBC Television, CBC Radio and CBCNews.ca.
Before taking on this role she was executive director of CBC Radio.
Of McGuire’s appointment, Richard Stursberg, executive vice-president of CBC English Services said:
“She’s done a superb job since last fall, not only leading our news team, but also in championing our ongoing initiative to position CBC News as a fully integrated, multiplatform service for Canadians.”
