A British Columbia Supreme Court ruling means the Victoria Times
Colonist can attend and report on a judicial recount of
election results in the federal riding of Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca.

“It’s believed to be the first time a media organization will be allowed
to witness the Elections Canada proceedings, which have previously been
held in secret,” reported CanWest. “The decision allows a Times Colonist reporter to watch how lawyers
argue over disputed ballots and, ultimately, how a judge arrives at the
decision to count or reject a vote.”

It’s a mystery why that process was previously secret.
