“Postmedia spokeswoman Phyllise Gelfand said Kelly had been considering internal opportunities but announced Friday that he would be leaving the company,” the wire service wrote.

His departure comes two weeks after Postmedia Network fired three publishers, eliminated the position entirely and replaced oversight of its 10 newspapers with three regional managers. Marty Klyne, publisher of the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Guy Huntingford, publisher of the Calgary Herald and John Connolly, publisher of the Edmonton Journal, were let go as part of the restructuring plan to reduce costs.

At the time of the announcement, Kelly was considering other job opportunities within the company. Prior to becoming publisher, Kelly was the editor-in-chief of the National Post for five years.

Under the new management structure, Gerry Nott, currently publisher and editor-in-chief of the Ottawa Citizen, in the new Eastern region manager of the Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Windsor Star and National Post. Alan Allnutt, publisher and editor of The Gazette, will manage the Prairie newspapers StarPhoenix, Leader-Post, Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald, while Pacific Newspaper Group president Gordon Fisher will continue to manage Postmedia’s two Vancouver-based dailies, The Province and the Sun.
