— Sandie Rinaldo (@SandieR_ctv) May 5, 2013

She began her career with the CTV by answering phones. Four decades later, Sandie Rinaldo has made history as the first woman in Canada to anchor a daily network newscast.

The veteran journalist celebrated 40 years with CTV News on Monday. Rinaldo was told she had one chance to prove herself when she initially auditioned for an on-air position with Canada AM in 1977, and she’d either “sink or swim.”

“Women, I think, in those days had to work harder, prove ourselves, be better at the job than men were, simply to move ahead a step,” she said in an interview.  ““Look at us today,” she said. “Women are totally and unequivocally equal partners with men. There’s no such thing as the glass ceiling anymore […] Sometimes I think about it, and I’m completely stunned by the passage of time.”

Check out Rinaldo’s reflections on her 40-year association with CTV and a photo gallery of Rinaldo through the years.
